The mission of the Breaking Barriers Community
Services Center (BBCSC) is to coordinate
a community response to catastrophic
illness in Sacramento by coordinating volunteers
to care for people and by developing
programs for early detection and prevention
of these conditions.
Breaking Barriers provides disease prevention
education and support services to
low-income persons living with or at-risk for HIV/AIDS or breast
cancer. Our core services are the heart of our mission and include
volunteer support services, transportation for clients to medical
or social work appointments, nutrition/food delivery, case management,
social support programs and household chore work.
The scope and breadth of our volunteer services are unique to
the Sacramento Region.
Our HIV Education and Prevention program targets high risk
Youth, Gay/Bi men, men who have sex with men (MSM) but do
not identify as Gay/Bi, high risk women of color (specifically African
American women), and MSM who also use injection drugs.
All of our services are developed and designed through a community
process. We conduct focus groups and administer client
surveys to help identify client and community needs. We then
consult with other providers and our volunteer teams to help us
develop plans to meet those needs.
We partner with several organizations to ensure access to the
community and maximum impact for our educational programs,
including CARES, Golden Rule Services, Harm Reduction Services,
Sunburst Projects and Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center.

The mission of the PRIDE Center is to support the LGBTQQIA students of
California State University, Sacramento. Through dynamic programming
and educational outreach, the PRIDE Center seeks to improve the campus
climate for LGBTQQIA students and advocate for the respect and safety
of all members of the campus community. In collaboration with other
campus programs, the PRIDE Center works to meet the needs of students
to promote the successful completion of their educational goals.
